True but misleading

A lie by any other name

I read a guarantee on a “help you get funded website” whose name I won’t mention until I create a “wall of shame.” They charge a lot of money for fully guaranteed results. This sounds good until we read the guarantee which says if you don’t get funded in a year, you can list with them for another year. That’s the entire guarantee.

While it is true that they have a guarantee, it is misleading.

I stumbled on many other misleading things recently.

Our user-base has doubled every month for the past year …

… we now have just over 2,000 users.

Our town has the fastest growing economy in the country this year …

… after 5 years of economic collapse.

The elected official is committing adultery …

… he and his spouse have been separated for years, and his wife introduced him after the breakup to his new girlfriend.

We are rated well above all our competitors …

… in a survey of our most loyal users.

All the graduates of our program quickly got jobs in their field …

… the graduation rate is vanishingly small and succeeding at a paid internship is a graduation requirement.

If it is purposefully misleading, even if it is somehow technically true, I’ll call it a lie.

And that’s the honest .
