AI, Roman Gladiators, and Probabilistic Sex

I believe, with a rather high degree of confidence, that the vast majority of Roman gladiators were male.

So when my Roman Gladiator prompt gives me a picture of a man, I don’t take any special notice of it. It’s simply history.

The vast majority of American presidents, convicted felons, astronauts, and convicted felons that have been American presidents are also male.

But when I ask for astronauts or presidents, should the images all be of men?

Gladiators were simply history. Not too many people are currently thinking of gladiator as a career choice.

But being president or astronaut (but hopefully not a convicted felon) is a plausible current aspiration.

They seem different.

We seem to be at risk of failing to encourage half the population to not dream big.

The simple use of the noun in a prompt doesn’t give us much of a hint as to the user’s intent or the potential impact on the user.

There is a societal/ethical issue here.

And, unlike most such issues in AI, I know that I don’t know the right answer.

I don’t believe it has been given much thought, and even once it is given significant attention, I don’t know that there will be a consensus answer.

I don’t even know how to properly frame the question, and I would be grateful to anyone who can help frame the question.
