A while back, reading my LinkedIn feed was an uplifting experience.
In less than an hour, I was exposed to a mindful’s worth of ideas, more topics to write about than I could cover in a month. and more new areas than I could learn about in a life time.
Coming back to reading LinkedIn after many months away, it doesn’t feel like that anymore.
I ran a poll here to try to see if others were having the same experience.
For me, it has gone from crashing my browser from opening too many tabs for posts I was excited about to mainly being ads (whether “LinkedIn Promoted” or self-promotion) and motivational quotes. I find very little of the remainder is worth opening a tab for. (At least my browser is now stable — smile.)
What changed?
- Has LinkedIn content gone to hell in a handbasket?
- Has “the algorithm” begun to fail me?
- Has an extended period of failing to “like” things not given the algorithm enough to go on?
- Have I accepted connection requests from too many of the wrong people?
- Has my taste simply changed?
- Has generative AI destroyed this part of the universe?
I don’t know.
I am not finding enough things that I love to try to tell the algorithm what I want.
But I am finding plenty of things that I hate.
Will aggressively unfollowing bad sources & telling the algorithm about the things I hate by marking ads, posts, topics, and authors uninteresting be enough to return my feed to the paradise of times gone by?
Again, I don’t know.
It is an experiment waiting to happen.
An experiment that begins today.
