Quality vs Profitability

Understanding the sad state of the world by looking at computer games

Josh Strife Hayes talks about computer games and is especially talented at making complex ideas simple and important thoughts salient.

He recently released a video, What Went Wrong with Gaming?, that is worth watching even if you care nothing about gaming.

It explains how the world went astray as the best to make the money went from providing the best experience for the users, to being unrelated, to ultimately being completely at odds with providing the best experience.

He makes it easy to understand the evolution of predatory monetization strategies, their mechanics, and their impact. There are analogous problems outside of gaming, eCommerce, and much of modern life. Hayes’ list is far from exhaustive for the non-gaming world but still instructive.

That said, I still haven’t (yet) figured out how to incorporate it into my blog. Maybe I should watch it again (smile).

Russell has started three successful companies, one of which helped agencies of the federal government become very early adopters of open source software, long before that term was coined. His first project saved The American taxpayer 250 million dollars. In his work within federal agency, he was often called, “the arbiter of truth,” facilitating historically hostile groups and factions to effectively work together towards common goals
