The foundation focuses mainly on providing insurance to patients for a 12 month period. Also, the foundation will provide relief to patients with needs such as household bills, like mortgage, rent, utilities, groceries, etc. with grants through SCDAI, the Sickle Cell Disease Assoc. of Illinois.
The foundation understands the needs of patients, because Founder Robert L. Mackey’s mother Lydia W. Smith is living with the disease and he and his siblings are living with the trait. 18 years ago, Robert’s mom was diagnosed & given 7 years to live and also was told by the doctor if she made it pass those 7, she wouldn’t live to see 50. She’s 56 years old now.
So to commerate the life of his mom & other survivors the ticket price for this event is $56.00. Sickle Cell Anemia maybe one of the least funded diseases and The LWS Foundation will do its part in providing awareness, education and relief.
